Gov' Removes VAT from electricity bills
One of the first actions taken by our new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, was to remove VAT from electricity bills.
This is hugely welcome news and will make a real difference to households across Leyton and Wanstead. The measure is being funded through the cancellation of the Digital ID programme, helping to put money back into people's pockets at a time when many families are still feeling the pressure of rising costs.
Local businesses, care homes and charities will benefit too. Organisations that currently pay the domestic 5% rate of VAT on their electricity bills will pay no VAT at all from 1 October.
This is a clear example of this Labour Government's determination to bring down the cost of living. The economic impacts of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and this year's US-Iran conflict are still being felt, but this action is designed to give local families, businesses and community organisations more breathing space as we head into the winter months.
