Pride Month: Intervention on EHRC guidance

Pride month should be a time for celebration and joy. Sadly, that isn’t what I’ve heard from LGBT+ constituents and allies since the Equality and Human Rights Commission guidance was published this week.
I believe it is incredibly important to set out that our trans and non-binary neighbours are loved and respected, and I fully understand why this change is so worrying for many.
We need to recognise that transphobia and bigotry against those who don’t conform to gender norms is on the rise, largely as a result of the divisive tactics of a small minority within politics and the media. And we need to make policy for the world as it is, not assume that we can wish a fully inclusive society into being.
I intervened in Parliament’s Pride Month debate to ask for assurances that the concerning impacts from the EHRC guidance will be reviewed and addressed swiftly if they occur.
