Statement: Last night’s incident outside Noor Ul Islam Mosque

Following a deeply distressing incident outside Noor Ul Islam Mosque last night, I have been in close contact with the police.

A suspect has been apprehended and there is no further threat currently perceived to our community.

Whilst I welcome the swift police action, I want to acknowledge the fear and upset this will have caused within our community.

We must be clear: there is no place for hatred in Leyton and Wanstead. An attack on someone because of their faith is an attack on all of us.

The police are investigating this as a hate crime, and it is right that it is treated with the seriousness it deserves.

Tomorrow I will be meeting with the neighbourhood policing team leader and Brother Yusuf to discuss what more can be done to support the mosque and keep our community safe.

Leyton is strongest when we stand together. Acts of hatred will never define our community; the solidarity and compassion shown by our residents always will.
