Tackling East London’s Housing Crisis

The housing crisis is a blight on East London. It stops our young people from gaining independence and starting a family. It eats away at life chances and opportunities through unaffordable rents. It causes rocketing homelessness that is pushing our councils towards bankruptcy.
One of my priorities for this years' Labour Party Conference was to talk with experts not just about housing problems, but housing policy solutions. The government has a strong agenda on this already, from investment in new social homes, planning reform to increase building, and the Renters’ Rights Bill. But this is a generational challenge, and I believe there’s more we can do to tackle it.
I’m grateful to Shelter, the Renters' Reform Coalition and Labour Housing Group for talking with me about how we can feed in and hopefully secure even stronger policies in the months to come.
