Hostile state actors like the IRGC have done serious harm to the UK, with more than 20 potentially lethal Iran-backed plots in our communities in just one year.
The government have rightly now proscribed the IRGC, alongside HAYI, the organisation that claimed responsibility for the despicable series of attacks against London’s Jewish communities earlier this year, as well as Persian-language journalists who oppose the Iranian regime’s oppression of its people.
The methods used by the Iranian regime are very similar to those used by Russia to sponsor arson in Leyton and Islamophobic racist vandalism directed at our Muslim neighbours.
We also need to recognise that those methods are targeting local young people, seeking to manipulate them from afar into throwing their lives away by participating in vandalism, arson, and other acts of sabotage and division. These tactics are very deliberate – they are designed to undermine our social cohesion by creating fear and distrust.
But there is nothing inevitable about conflicts abroad being imported into our communities. We can defeat this threat by standing together with our neighbours against all forms of hatred and violence.
