The vital importance of our continued support for the BBC World Service was powerfully demonstrated by the courageous reporting from BBC Persian, which has provided millions of Iranians and people across the world with factual information during the recent conflict.

Over the past few days, I have continued discussions with the government about proposed welfare reforms which began in March, when I went into Downing Street to press concerns directly. I have made clear my belief the government should have framed this issue very differently from the start.   As a result of this combined pressure from Labour MPs, significant changes have been made, including those confirmed last week and during the debate today. It’s been another busy month both locally and in Parliament. Here’s a look at some of what I’ve been working on in June. Knocked on doors in Cann Hall, Leyton and Grove Green, listening directly to residents and talking through local priorities.

It was great to meet local community members at the Wanstead Quaker Meeting House last week. Thank you for having me for delicious tea and cake and an engaging Q&A session on peace, the environment, the armed forces and more!

Great to visit the team at Maximus in Leyton on Employability Day. I had the chance to meet some of the dedicated staff delivering vital employment support through the Restart Scheme and Work and Health Programme, helping local people across Leyton and Wanstead into work.

Today we have voted on the Third Reading of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which has passed through the House of Commons with a majority of 23. The Bill will now proceed to be considered by the House of Lords. This has been a challenging, complex debate and today was no exception. I have continued to read the emails being sent to me with interest and engage with individual constituents and experts.

This week, I am in France and Germany with the Defence Select Committee, so I was unable to vote on the Crime and Policing Bill on Tuesday. Although I could not participate in any of the votes on amendments to this bill, I supported my constituency neighbour Stella Creasy’s amendment (New Clause 20), which sought to enshrine abortion access as a human right and to prevent women who have terminated their own pregnancies from being criminally investigated.

This week I had the privilege of visiting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as the UK Trade Envoy. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the British Embassy team for their invaluable support and dedication throughout my visit, the DRC is a country of remarkable resilience, though it remains a complex environment in which to operate.

It was lovely to visit Snaresbrook Primary School in Wanstead last week, meeting bright young minds and dedicated staff who make this school so special.

I recently met with the Foreign Secretary to address the urgent situation in Palestine. During our discussion, I conveyed the serious concerns of constituents regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the Israeli blockade restricting aid access to Gaza.

Over the past days, it’s becoming ever harder to find the words to describe how appalling Israel’s actions have become. I have engaged so frequently with the government about this issue, and I know the efforts of the Minister and diplomats are genuine and heartfelt.
